  Since 2006, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) has been orbiting Mars, currently circling approximately 300 km (187 mi) above the Martian surface. On board the MRO is HiRISE, the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera, which has been photographing the planet for several years now at resolutions as fine as mere inches per pixel. Collected here is a group of images from HiRISE over the past few years, in either false color or grayscale, showing intricate details of landscapes both familiar and alien, from the surface of our neighboring planet, Mars. • Invloed
  n zijn boek De Staat (soms beter bekend als De Republiek), zegt Plato dat de mens door alles wat hem omgeeft wordt beïnvloed –van kleur en geur tot architectuur en literatuur. Het is dan ook belangrijk, zo stelt Plato, dat de staat controle houdt over wat de mens te zien en te horen krijgt. Als de menselijke gedachte wordt ‘gemaakt’ door wat hij te zien en te horen krijgt, en de mens eigenlijk niet bij machte is zelf te oordelen wat goede gedachten zijn, dan moet iemand (in casu de staat) dat voor hem doen. In zijn visie bestonden de leiders van de staat dan uit mensen die op zoek waren naar die wijsheid. In theorie een fantastisch principe, maar in praktijk moeilijk verwezenlijkbaar, zo toont ons bijvoorbeeld het communisme (de vroege communisten moesten niet ver zoeken voor hun ideologie –Plato had het allemaal al voor hen uitgewerkt).

• Mediaconcentratie in Vlaanderen – Communicatiemannen
  De Vlaamse Regulator voor Media brengt elk jaar een erg boeiend rapport uit. Zo ook dit jaar. Het document is opgebouwd uit drie hoofdstukken:

  * Overzicht van de Vlaamse mediasector (radio, tv, geschreven pers en internet)
  * De verschillende mediagroepen & mediaspelers en hun vertakkingen
  * De concentratie van de mediagroepen onder de loep genomen

  Algemeen kan gesteld worden dat Vlaanderen een beperkt en nauw verweven medialandschap kent. Zo is er geen enkele aanbieder die in alle sectoren vertegenwoordigd is, al komen De Persgroep en Concentra er dicht bij. Enkel de distributie ontbreekt om een full service mediaspeler te worden. Wat verder opvalt, het gebrek aan buitenlandse inmenging. Met uitzondering van Sanoma en SBS is alles van eigen bodem en zijn het in tegenstelling de Vlaamse mediagroepen die buiten de landsgrenzen een kijkje gaan nemen (De Persgroep, Roularta en nu ook Corelio).

  And while I’m no proponent of a whirling buzz of activity, I also believe people get lost in the distractions of the world and lose sight of what’s important, and how to actually accomplish their Something Amazing.

  And so today I’d like to humbly present a few little rules of action — just some small reminders, things I’ve found useful but by no means invented, common-sense stuff that is often not common enough.

• The 40-30-30 Rule: Why Risk Is Worth It
  On a ride up the ski lift, my coach told me I was missing the point. He explained that success in ski racing, or most sports for that matter, was only 40% physical training. The other 60% was mental. And of that, the first 30% was technical skill and experience. The second 30% was the willingness to take risks. With ski racing, specifically, that meant taking the risk of leaning harder into turns, balancing at a steeper angle to the slope, and placing greater pressure on the outside ski edge – all of which increased the chance of falling. My coach explained, though, that if I wasn’t falling at least once a day in training, I wasn’t trying hard enough. Indeed, to improve at anything, we must at some point push ourselves outside our comfort zone. Body builders call it the “pain period.” Only by trying something new, struggling, learning, and then trying again do we improve our performance. It’s a simple matter of acclimating to unchartered territory.

• ignore the code: Google Wave's Scrollbars
  In spite of some of the reaction to it, I find Google Wave to be surprisingly useful. One thing I don’t really understand, though, is its scrollbars. They behave quite differently from regular scrollbars, and I can’t discern any overwhelming advantages of Google’s implementation. It seems I’m not alone. The unofficial Google Wave manual deems it necessary to explain how the scrollbars work. Google’s own support site for Wave has an entry titled What’s the deal with the scrollbar?, and there’s even a Chrome extension which replaces Google’s scrollbars with native scrollbars.

  Het meeste werk voor een dergelijke opdracht kruipt vanzelfsprekend in de research. Waarover wil je babbelen, wat is er interessant, wat is je doelgroep?
  Ik botste via de input van een paar twitteraars (waarvoor dank!) op de recruteringscampagne van het Zweedse leger, en meer bepaald op de huidige recrutering. Schitterend.
